Burlington Bay Campground, Two Harbors MN

The view from our picnic table
This is a city run campground, just north of the city on the shores of Lake Superior. The first couple loops are not very big rig friendly except for a few pull throughs.  Most are better for pop-ups, small trailers or tents, in the 3rd loop there are a few that are bigger, we were in site #90 and it was Just long enough for our 30 ft 5th wheel and was fairly level. The best sites for bigger rigs are in the furthest and newest loop. There are about 5 sites that look directly out to the lake. We were in a FHU site that was $27 a night. There is a lot of road noise during the day but the views from this campground make all that disappear as an issue for us. I could just sit at my rig watch the lake. We think this is a great place to stay. They do take reservations and I am sure it is a very busy place all summer so I would call ahead and check before heading here.

Thompson West End Campground, Washburn WI

This campground is one of two campgrounds run by the city of Washburn. The other is the Memorial Campground. This is a great place to explore the Bayfield and Apostle Islands from. They are just 12 mi. north. The sites are well spaced but are electric only so you do need to fill your fresh water tank before parking. There are spaces here for even big rigs and it is fairly wide open to get around. It is just off Lake Superior so the views are great. The best sites are large sites along the lake. They do have cable at each site, that was pretty cool. The price is right too, $22 a night or $140 for a week, so it is 7 nights for the price of 6. The only down side I can mention is that the showers are pay, $.25 for 3 minutes, but the water pressure is great.  A couple other pluses is the grocery store IGA is nearby and is a decent store for such a small town and attached to it is a nice laundramat. We would definitely stay here again if we were in the area.

Bear Mountain, Bakersfield CA

Bear Mountain was just a stop on our way to to a work camping gig in California. It was basically a large gravel parking lot with hook ups. It is south of the city and was convenient to get to but other than that it really doesn't have much going for it.  Ok for a stop over but wouldn't stay for long, they had a special going on so the rate was good but there are other better places in the area.

Zion River Resort, Virgin UT

Zion River Resort was to be our home for December 2010. I found this site online and it looked to be a place we would really like. The temperatures are usually moderate (50s) with plenty of sunshine. I talked to Mason, the manager before I booked. This resort has an very good snowbird rate, around $460 per month plus electric and is a very nice resort. I don’t think we could afford the in season rate but then we probably wouldn’t like the crowds at that time either. The resort is about 20 miles from the main entrance to Zion National Park. The park is open year round and many of the trails are open all year. We loved our time in the park, sometimes we were all by ourselves on the trails. We did have to leave early as Mother nature decided to send us a curve in the form of a flood. The park sits right on the Virgin river and rain and snow melt upstream created quite a flood. This is not something anyone could forsee. Though it cut our time short it did not take away from the fact that this is a very nice and well run park. The manager Mason is a gem and tries to do whatever she needs to make your stay pleasant. The snowbird group is relatively small and we really enjoyed our time here. We can definitely see ourselves returning here.

Sam's Town RV Park, Las Vegas NV

Sam's Town RV park is where we were for our Thanksgiving visit before we headed to Zion and where we returned to after we were flooded out of Zion.  The sites are tight and the sewer connection is questionable but there were other things that made this a good place to be in Las Vegas.  First, it is easy to get to. From the south on Nevada 95 just get off on Boulder Highway and go north until Sam’s town appears on the right. The entrance is just before the casino.  The RV park has its own pool and hot tub in the park as well as a decent laundry facility. You are a short walk to the casino which has decent restaurants, a very nice bowling alley and a movie theater. Another perk for this casino is the free shuttle to both the Vegas Strip and Fremont Street. This probably where we will stay if we return to the area. The price is not bad if you get the weekely price it is about $25.00 a night with tax included.

Cave Creek Regional Park, Cave Creek AZ

Our first site #22

Our 2nd site #2
Cave Creek is one of the Maricopa County Regional Parks. It is just north of Phoenix off of Carefree Highway. It was recommended to us by a couple we met at Roper Lake and we thank them for this gem. This is a desert campground that is absolutely beautiful. The sites are huge and you never feel crowded by the neighbors. We stayed 2 weeks here, first week in site 22, great for watching the sun set but the rig is positioned so you get very little shade even with the awning out. So week 2 we moved to site 2 which is a pull out that had great shade and even a little tree. The site have water and electric and are $25 a night. You can stay 14 days in one site then you either have to leave if there are rigs waiting in the overflow (which we have heard is common in the peak of snowbird season) or you have to move sites. We talked with one couple who relayed that there are many who stay here all winter just moving sites every 14 days or moving into the overflow until they can get back in. We can see why - it is that nice.  There is a lot of great hiking in the park as well and the camp hosts are great. The shower houses have separate shower rooms and are as clean as we've come across. The date of our stay were November 1st to the 15th.

This also was a nice spot to get to visit Phoenix and close enough to drive to Prescott and Sedona. We only made it to Prescott, but we were being lazy. The driving is a little crazy in Phoenix but by the time we left we had it pretty well figured out. If you are going to do much in the Phoenix area just be prepared to do some driving, nothing is close except for Cave Creek which is a nice little town with some fun shopping and a few good restaurants. I know we will stay here again the future.

Roper Lake State Park, Safford AZ

View across the lake from our site

Roper Lake State Park is just south of Safford AZ off of US 191. The lake itself is relatively small. We stayed in the Cottonwood Campground in a back in site with a view of the lake. These sites have water and electric and are $23 a night. However when we were there they had a special of stay five nights get 2 nights free. We took that as we knew we were staying at least 5 nights and that left our leaving open ended.
Our site
In the end we stayed October 27th to the 31st, leaving after 5 nights because we needed to get to the Phoenix area to have the truck worked on.
The campground here is nothing special but the view, the night skies, and the atmosphere are great. We would return here and probably stay longer. There is another campground loop, the Hacienda loop with is also nice but has more reserved spots and I don't think the views are as nice. The bathroom/shower houses were clean.
